Symbol Presentation

Teachers will have about 5 minutes to teach their symbol to the class
and 1 minute to answer questions.
 

 
 Introduction
"Hi, I am Bob" or something a little more impressive like "Professor Jones."
Some students have added an "About the Author" page to tell a little more about themselves.
 
 
 Tell the class the name of the symbol
Make sure everyone has opened their packet to your page.
 
 
 Teach (with technology)

(A) CHOOSE TECHNOLOGY
 "Teachers" MUST use the technology in some way.
Power Point is usually the #1 choice for students.
Prezi and Smart Notebook are also popular. 
Google Docs Slides might be a great option.

(B) WHERE IS YOUR SYMBOL USED

Create a fictional use where your symbol is valuable.

Example: decoding of DNA, measuring the humor in math puns, etc.



(C) SHARE YOUR ALGORITHM
We usually see two different methods:

Direct Instruction
Some students tell the class exactly how the symbol works. 

Self Discovery
Others give at least 5 examples and let the class try to figure it out the algorithm by looking for a pattern.
            Note:  this method should not be done if the operation is very complicated.

Take questions from the class. See below for questions that are commonly asked.

(E) WORK
If time permits, give your students opportunity to try problems as teacher walks around.



 Close
End the lesson with the homework assignment.
Give students 0, 1, or 2 points for behavior.
 
 

 
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
 
How much time do I have to teach?
About 5-6 minutes.  This is not timed, but presenters will not get much more than that.  Some flexibility is used with certain lessons.  Easier operations might need less time than a more complicated one.  Some students create slide shows that may take a minute or two longer.
 
If you want to do something you think is unusual, feel free to ask Mr. P about it during advisory.
 

Do I need to copy my worksheet?
No.  All worksheets will be copied by Mr. P in an organized packet. 
Only ONE is to be created.
 

Can I bring in props?
Yes.
Students in the past have dressed up as well.   
Remember:  keep your lesson about your symbol and do not pass out candy.
Keep the focus on your symbol.  
 

What kind of questions do people ask at the end of the lesson?
Be prepared to answer these commonly asked questions: 
 
    >>> How did you come up with the name and shape of your symbol?
    >>> What happens if ZERO is one of the numbers used with your symbol?
    >>> What happens if ONE is one of the numbers used with your symbol?
    >>> Does ORDER matter? Is 5 lem 4 the same as 4 lem 5?
    >>> Can you solve a problem with your symbol using decimals? fractions?
            (You can't just say "yes" or "no," as your answer needs to follow rules of mathematics.)
 
Finally, Mr. P will go over the algebra expression for the symbol and ask if anyone found alternate ways of doing the problems.
 

May I use technology to teach my lesson?
YES! This is not optional.

Most frequently used:  Power Point Google Doc Slides, and Prezi as they are pretty easy to use.

Remember: the focus is on teaching your symbol, not the technology.

 

Can I show how my symbol works using algebra?
No.  
That is what students do at the end of each lesson.

You will have to explain how it works using words.
    Multiply the two numbers together and then add one to the answer.
    Or
    Step 1: multply     Step 2: add 1

In the front of the packet, we will attempt to write the algorithm in algebra.

Should I know the answers to my questions when I am teaching?
Yes.
You have to complete your own worksheet anyway. 
It might be a good idea to have a few samples and answers as well.



What kinds of technology is available?
Mr. P has a projector connected to a computer and VCR/DVD player.  There is a Smartboard, a document camera, and the ability to connect iPads, iPhones, laptops, etc. to the projector.
I have a cord to connect a standard laptop and wide adapter for olde iPhone 4/iPad2. 
I do not have the narrow doggle for a Mac laptop or iPhone5/6 at this time.
Not sure if your device will connect? Try before school, during indoor recess, or advisory BEFORE starting.
  

How can I use my iPad to teach?
There are many tools on the iPad.  

One of the best apps is Smart Notebook, a free tool that is great for presentations. It also comes with an easy to follow user's guide.
 
Caitlin's Doodle Buddy Method
(1) Make a picture (slide) on Doodle Buddy.
(2) Save slide to photo album.
(3) Make more slides and save them.
(4) Flipping through these "photos" with the Ipad connected to our projector works as a great presentation tool.
 
* Mr. P only has a doggle that will connect with the wide end, not the newer smaller cords.


How can I bring in a file to use for my lesson?
Four easy ways:
1)  VPN: vpn.tesd.net/  (Use this connection to move your school work between home and school)
2)  Flash drive
3)  Email file to protherok@tesd.net (as long as file is not too big)
4)  Google Docs - ask Mr. P how to share file.
5)  The old fashion way: Burn on disk 
 

tip: a great way to avoid tech problems is to test your file before the day you are set to present.
 
Beware!  Computers don't always work the way you want them to, so you might want to try your computer file BEFORE the day you are scheduled to teach. 
 
CAUTION: The fonts on my computer might not be the same as yours.
Music effects have not always been successful when files are brought from home to school. 
 

What does Mr. P do during lessons?
He will sit with the class and be a student, completing the work with everyone else.
No, you may not give him detention, take away his recess, or send him to the office.
