 Study Island: Lessons & Flashcards
Need help? Additional Instruction?Just a refresher? Looking for higher scores?
Click on the word "Lesson" next to the assignment for more information.
Some of the lessons have videos.
To get access to Flashcards, click on the small image next to the word "Lesson"

 Scrap Paper & Other Tips
Scrap Paper
Need to do work on paper? Try SCRATCH PAD on Study Island.
There is a cool feature that allows you to do scrap work on the computer with a mouse.
Click on the left side on the icon "scratch pad."
A pencil and paper works just as well.

Waiting until the last minute
Students can complete Study Island before homebase, during activity in the library, or at advisory.
I do not recommend starting on Sunday night in case there are questions.

 Homework Information

Homework on Study Island
There will be about ONE Study Island assignment per week. Most of the time it will be 10 questions.

Getting a lot of questions incorrect? Click on "explanation" button or get extra help.
Game mode = more fun
Practice mode = faster
CAREFUL! There are some fill-in-the-blanks, so make sure you use a "0" (zero) and not an o" (letter).
Spelling will also count. Feel free to check that on line, a dicationary, etc.

Why Study Island?
    (1) Review and practice of concepts we have been working on.
    (2)
Experience using the process of elimination.
    (3) Familiarization with standardized test format.
    (4) Interactive.
    (5) Instant feedback.

(6) Exposure to on-line schoolwork.
NO calculators unless the Study Island calculator is active.
You should answer questions independently without help from anyone.

Scoring (out of 5 points)*
5 - 90% and above
4 - completed score in the 80's
3 - completed score in the 70's
2 - completed score in the 60's
1 - partially done or score less than 60%
0 - not done
*Students can do more than 10 problems to raise their % score or ask to have it reset.
Additional points MAY be added when students go way beyond expected number of problems.

Oops! Messed up? Want your score RESET?

If you mess up on one of the first few Study Island assignments (ex: confuse the > and < signs and do the opposite), there is a good chance your score can be reset.

Advisory is the best time for this, but you can also speak with me before homebase or at the end of class.

Email request to reset is OK, but I prefer students ask in person.

Do NOT wait until the last minute. The earlier in the week that this happens, the greater the chance of getting your score reset.

Students who achieve above an 80% will probably not have their score changed.

Feel free to complete more problems to improve percentage.

Don't forget that you can click on LESSON next to the title of assignment and EXPLANATION when you get problems wrong.

Multiple attempts

If you log on and do poorly (say 5 out of 10).
Log on a second time and do great (say 10 out of 10).
The computer will combine both attempts (15 out of 20 for a 75%).

You can also ask me to delete first attempt.

PROBLEMS and PASSWORDS

Can't log in?
There are 3 common problems:
(1) Formal Name
The student names that are entered into the system are generally formal names.
So if your name is William Smith but go by Billy, your user name will probably be 21SmithW

(2) New to the district?
Try leaving off the "1"
(3) Short Last Names
If your last name has very few letters, try using your last name + entire first name for password.

(3) Hyphen
No hyphens are used in user or passwords. Try adding a space.

Still can't get on? Email Mr. P at protherok@tesd.net

Changing Password
I recommend using the same one you use for school so you don't have to remember two different passwords.
When you are logged on, you will see your name in a blue box at the top of the screen.
Click on your name and you can change your password on the next page.

Can't access the internet at home?
Some people might have slow internet connections or there are many family members that need to share a computer.
Mr. Prothero has classroom computers that can be used before 7:45 and during 8th period advisory.
The library computers are also available at certain times during the day.

Having trouble on your home computer?
Try using a different browser.
You will also want to have the latest versions of both Java and Flash

THIS WEEKLY HOMEWORK IS ONLY 5 POINTS!
YOU ARE NOT EXPECTED TO GET 100% EVERY TIME.
USE P.O.E. AND MAKE EDUCATED GUESS IF YOU NEED TO.
COMPUTERS ARE AVAILABLE IN MY ROOM IF YOU CAN'T ACCESS AT HOME.
JUST TRY YOUR BEST AND ASK FOR HELP IF NEEDED.
